In Retrospect

Ok, so the year is almost over and here are some thoughts about it. I couldn’t really come up with anything interesting to say, but anyway here goes:

Growing - His Return
You can keep your Sunn0)))’s and Khanate’s, when I’m in the mood for Post/Drone Metal only Growing will do. Even though this is a rather short album by their standards it is by far their best, and also the best new album I’ve heard this year.

Why? - Elephant Eyelash
In 2005 even alternative rock can be hip-hop.

Porn Sword Tobacco - Explains Freedom
In 2005 even Vangelis can be electronica.

Greg Davis & Sebastien Roux - Paquet Surprise
This was one of the typical albums for 2005, you knew it would be great before you heard it and it didn’t disapoint you. In a way it’s been a boring year in that way since there hasn’t been any surprises, but on the other hand tracks like “I Never Met Her” makes up for that.

Odd Nosdam - Burner
In 2005 even shoegazing can be hip-hop.

The Roaring - The Famous Solo
I think this is the album I’ve been most excited over in the whole year. This has been the soundtrack of my autumn 2005.

Sawako - Hum
One of the few surprises this year is this debut on 12k by this japanese New Yorker. Subtle fieldrecordings and gentle drones. Maybe nothing new, but very wellcrafted and soothing.

Deaf Center - Pale Ravine
In 2005 Brain Eno and Harold Budd moved to Norway and recorded their best album since The Pearl.

The Boats - We Made It For You
Dreamy, drifting and warm - of course “We Made It For You” made it into my list for 2005.

Tape - Rideau
I had my doubts, but of course Tape delivered in the end. I couldn’t decide if I should put this or their Mort Aux Vaches release on the list, but it seems I’m listening more to “Rideau” and I guess that means something.

Birchville Cat Motel - Chi Vampires
He managed to make one of the best albums and played one of the best shows I’ve seen in the whole year, and if that wasn’t enough Birchville Cat Motel inspired me to listen to Iron Maiden again.

Other:
Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words - Fall, Fall, Falling
The best album of 2007.

Jonas Lindgren - Saltholmen
It deserves to be on a best-this-year list, even if I have to do it myself.

Viktor Sjöberg - Youthful Follies
This is a collection of tracks, old releases etc, but really, it is one of the best albums this year. Viktor is also on the list of best persons 2005.

Ah, that’s cool! But where do I send it?

I checked out your lists too btw, good shit. I still don’t know why everybody are listing the Sunn0))) album though, I was kind of disapointed in it really. I love them live, but on record they always bore me.

Send it to my email adress (I guess you have it since I need to enter it every time, here above) and get ready for instant fame.

Ah, of course! I was looking for some info about it on your blog.

Ok, I will mail it later!

It’s actually Bert’s blog but hey, we’re one big happy family. Right, son?

damn I always forget to tune in regularly with your blog and there’s so much good stuff on it! no more though, i’m adding it to my rss reader now.

and jonas, i’m fairly sure maarten igor is confusing you with jonas sonores , hence the familiar tone. i’ll make sure to point out his ignorance next time i see him. :)

really really love your end of the year list btw. and i’m not a sunno fan at all either. also the new boats album and porn sword tobacco didn’t do it for me this time, i liked their previous albums better. and i really need to check the roaring and the new tape album. thank you for that.

i’m going to add it this to my blog as well and link you ok?
    cheers
    bert

Ah, I actually thought that it might be some kind of misunderstanding, but you never know right!?

And I have to agree about the Porn Sword Tobacco album, I do like the first one better, but on the other hand it was my favourite album of 2004, soo.. I think Explains Freedom is underrated as hell, but on the other hand I can understand why people aren’t crazy about it. I love all of the Phil Collins drumming and FM synthesis so for me it was a perfect album.

Great, please go ahead and add my list, that’s great! Oh, and about missing stuff on blogs, I actually added your RSS feed to InfoRSS just a week or so ago. I think I added a link from here too, but might have forgotten about it. If so, I’ll fix that.

    Cheers

    Woopsie!

I’m sorry. I got you confused with somebody else. Ignorance is bliss though and your site rules. I’ll try to back down on the familiar tone. Go forth and prosper my son. And since your not into the new Sunn O))), I have an even beter alternative: Ocean (important records). Also check the new Tape (Rideau), it’s swell. Bye.

Hey, no worries, it wasn’t like I was offended or something, just a little big confused for a moment. Comment as much as you want to and write whatever you feel like!

Hope to hear from you again!

Thanks. I admit I was a bit ashamed when Bert told me. And I see the Tape album is allready in your list. Must’ ve looked over that one. Here’s a thought: the beginning of the first song on Marsen Jules’ Herfstlaub is practically the same as a Deathprod song. I just can’t remember wich one.

  11. Gravatar 11 Jonas Lindgren Jan 19th, 2006 at 5:15 pm

Honestly, you have no reason at all to feel ashamed! Actually you are not the first one to confuse me with “the other Jonas”, so it’s all ok! :)

Ah, I haven’t listened enough to Deathprod to tell. I do love everything I’ve heard by him, but I think the only album I have is some old live cd-r, and I’m not even sure about that. Viktor has this beautiful Deathprod box that I would really like to get a copy of though.
