Frippertronics 2006

In celebration of me ordering my first Mac, a 1,83 Ghz Macbook C2D to be exact, I thought I should bring you this wonderful making-of documentary feautering Robert Fripp recording the sound scheme for Windows Vista.

You will hear Robert Fripp talk about musical coloration that will match Vistas color theme, blue and green with a hint of brown, while playing soft ambient textures on guitar and computer generated loops.

The Microsoft producer on the set is hilarious, directing with comments as “Now Robert, play us a loop that embodies the airy feeling of Vista, and we will quietly walk around the room” and “Push back the lush strings, make it more minimal… more minimal” to a smiling Robert Fripp who is probably only thinking about his growing Microsoft stock portfolio.

Though, silly as it may be, I find it wonderful that Microsoft takes the sound design so seriously and lets someone like Fripp do the job, just like they did with Windows 95 and Brian Eno, even though the vast majority of users probably don’t have any idea or even care who made the sounds. But in the end it wont make me stay on Windows, at least not for now. I always turn all of the system sounds off anyway.

(Oh, and two guys in the room are called Rod and Tod, how hilarious is that!?)

I like to think Microsoft hires these gentlemen because they are all old hippies who love ambient but I guess that is not the case.
